Dialysis

04fda body type default Dialysis

www.nucleusinc.com Dialysis. This 3D medical animation shows the two types of dialysis procedures for removing waste and excess fluid in the body when the kidneys stop functioning properly. Dialysis can also be done to treat acute kidney failure or to remove drugs or poisons from the body. In one type of dialysis, called hemodialysis, a dialyzer machine is used to clean the blood outside the body. In a peritoneal dialysis, the membranes lining the abdomen and intestines, called the peritoneum, is used to clean the blood without removing it from the body.

thank god for medical sience ?

@bigboi2008uk Thanks for the reply! Makes sense especially with the risk of infection.. I think the reason the people i know of use double lumen central lines, tunneled vascular caths, etc for their plasmapharesis or dialysis because they’re also recieving other long term IV medications. Idk if AV fistula’s? can be used for that type of thing or not.

  3. bigboi2008uk

@TheSarahABrown Hey, using a catheter is an option (via subclavian or int.jugular) but it’s mostly the very high risk of infection that makes AV fistula the preferred option. The catheter is useful? in an emergency though cos you don’t have to wait 6 weeks for it to be ready.

There is a place that? does Dialysis near where I live. I never want to have a Dialysis! I’m glad I keep my kidneys healthy :(
And why can’t they put people to sleep during the Dialysis ? :/

Can dialysis not be done through a central line or tunneled vascular catheter with two lumens? I know of people who’ve had plasmapheresis that way? and apheresis is extremely similar to dialysis.

Really? I remember reading that the high change in blood pressure across the artery-vein boundary would? cause rupture, especially on the weaker, thinner-walled venous end.

And even so, that still does not help the fact that the blood has been effectively short-circuited, and like the analogy to electronics, drastically reduces supply to the original intended target.

@1RadicalOne Actually fistulas are very strong and tend to last many years, longer than the graft.
What the fistula does is expand and strengthen the vein connected to the artery making repeated needle insertions easier? and with less risk.

People with veins which are not expected to expand to a big enough size or strength are given the graft.
In the graft is where you would insert the second needle, instead of the vein, but grafts tend to clot much more and sometimes cause infections.
